PCT day 76 - mile 1660 to mile 1691 (Donomore Cabin)
Last night in California, I'm staying tonight only one mile away from the border with Oregon, I was tempted to push forward and cross it today but on my way stood the Donomore Cabin with its glorious three walled toilet, carpet, pillows and a lot of character. I could not say no to a night spent in such an interesting place plus the weather seems to be moody it rained in the evening and thunders were rolling in the horizon all the afternoon.
There was a lot of ascending to be done today, I went up nearly 8000 feet in a thirty mile stretch. My goal was to split the mile difference for tomorrow and possibly hike into the first city in Oregon: Ashland in the afternoon stay the night and, wait for it.. have a ZERO the day after! There would be couple of reasons to have a day off, first one being that I didn't have one since I started hiking! Second to celebrate finishing California section of the trail which covers nearly 65% of the PCT. Finally that I could partake in 4th of July celebrations in a big (certainly by the PCT standards) city, see how Americans celebrate it as I probably won't have another chance to do it.
Other than the sky being a bit moody, it was a good day, looks like I again did not buy enough snacks and tortillas so my belly was a bit undernourished but hopefully I will pay my debt to it in two days time. Mount Shasta is still making appearances on the horizon and as beautiful as it is, I'm kind of sick of seeing it third week in a row, next big mountain please!
The only problem with staying in Ashland might be lack of accomodation, but apparently there is an RV park somewhere in town, so if the weather holds it should be a decent option. If not I might end up cowboy camping in a park, at this point I don't even care all that much.
Apparently there's a border patrol checking peoples backpacks at random when they cross the border fining for possession of drugs (weed is illegal in Oregon but legal in California) not that I posses any of it, the fine when caught is 1000$, yikes.
Sleeping in this rather neglected wooden cabin in the middle of the wood feels so luxurious, haha. It looks like I will have all of it to myself as a group of section hikers decided to set up tents outside.. losers!
Goodnight and hooray for Oregon!
