Post PCT - Oregon Coast Trail day 6

[Beverly Beach State Park to Wakonda Beach] Today wasn't a particularly amazing day. I start to think that it must have something to do with the Newport area, perhaps people hiking here in the past did not leave the best impression. I only spend about half an hour trying to catch a hitchhike as I knew it would be a waste of time and it was. The stream of cars didn't have any interest of stopping or even acknowledging my existence, so I gave up the concept altogether. Road and beach walking was the name of the game, I reached Newport fairly quickly had breakfast ice-cream and two McDouble's and carried on walking. Going through the massive Yaqina Bay Bridge was the highlight of the day, I really liked it's art deco design and the scale of it. It was hot and sunny all day and I forgot to top up my water before leaving the campsite but luckily there was few little water streams by the beach in the Seal Rock area. Half way through the day it finally occurred to me that I ne...

[Three Rocks to Beverly Beach State Park] "I don't take seriously anyone who talks about the environmental issues in this country anymore" Rad, the biker. Today kind of sucked but at least it had a good beginning. I went down from the Three Rocks and followed the road back to Highway 101 where I got a fairly quick hitchhike to Lincoln City. Once here I went straight to Safeway', did a small resupply and an obligatory Ben&Jerry's ice-cream, it was 'Topped Dirt Cake' today. I sat down on the bench outside the market and started to eat my breakfast. Then a guy walking to his car asked me if I hiked a lot so far, so I told him about my PCT adventure and current Oregon Trail travel he seemed impressed and handed me a bunch of banknotes adding up to 23 dollars, it was the second time it happened to me on trail, very generous gesture and actually helps me quite a bit since I can't currently withdraw any cash because I don't have a working bank card. I...

[Arch Cape to Netarts] I woke up in the morning and as promised by the Google search the weather was miserable, I decided to head out anyway and hiked about 10 miles through a really overgrown but quite pretty Oswald West State Park touching every wet fern and bramble along the way, I was dripping wet towards the end, last time my shoes got so full of water was well in Oregon when I hiked out from Ashland during the PCT over a month ago. I wasn't in the best of moods, my consolation price was seeing couple of elks which I spooked while they been grazing on the trail. Along the way I met group of people I also encountered yesterday on Tillamook Trail, they've been riding down the coast doing short hikes, it was quite funny as they have been the only humans I encounter in this miserable weather so far, we talked for a bit and went opposite directions. Oregon Coast Trail decided to steer towards Highway 101 as it usually did and force me to do more road walking which I did for ano...

[Gearhart to Arch Cape] Way more varied but horribly foggy day. It started of with few miles of road walking and going through a big town called Seaside with all the usual food chain suspects and even a Safeway. I had a McDonalds breakfast and a discounted Ben&Jerry's ice cream (Jimmy Fallon themed this time) from Safeway, I think I start to get addicted to those, they are just so good! Also putting a generic 888-888-8888 phone number at the checkout is a must as it gives you (sometimes completely unexpected) savings, it knocked 2.5$ out of the Ben&Jerry's for me, woohoo! After this hearty and nutritious breakfast I carried on walking by the beach until I reached first actual trailhead called Tillamook trail, it went through a forested area for about six miles and then it transitioned into another few miles long trail where quite a few movies has been shot, including: The Goonies, Twilight, Kindergarten Cop and Point Break. Next on the list was more beach walking, fog g...

[Warrenton to Gearhart] Out of the few options I was considering to take like hiking the Olympics Park, Tahoe Rim Trail or even Colorado Trail, I went for the easiest in many ways the Oregon Coast Trail. First of all this trail didn't require any extra permits or long distance traveling. Resupplying seemed quite easy with many small towns along the way, it was also completely different to the PCT. Another good thing about it is that I don't really care all that much about thru hiking it and if I don't it won't be a problem. I'll just see how and if I enjoy it, hike for a week or so and then perhaps go to sightsee few more cities before going back to Europe. It seems like the most budget friendly option as well. So did I like the trail so far? Not really, turns out that walking log distances on a beach is not particularly enjoyable, I'm hoping that next few days will bring some variance. There's so many cars on the beach, people living around here love to dri...
