Battleship Island

Image
Most of the time when i'm having a conversation with other explorers this place is being mentioned (it might be me though, heh), and i was always thinking what if .. But first of all i wanted to visit Japan, because of many reasons, and Nagasaki was one of the places i was planning to see. Few-lines-typed-into-google later and i knew Hashima is only 15 kilometers of Nagasaki's shore! What's even better, since 2009 there was regular tours operating to the island, blimey! Thank you internet. History : In 1859 Thomas Glover came to Nagasaki as a representative of Jardine Matheson Holdings Ltd. which imported Japanese green tea. Two years later, he established his own company, Glover Trading Co. He sold ships, guns and other goods to the Satsuma, Chosyu and Tosa clans. He wasn't just another merchant from Britain, he introduced western technology and style to Nagasaki i.e. imported first train called Iron Duke , it was the first steam locomotive to run in Japan. Haunted Asylums

New book by E. R. Vernor containing few of my old pictures from West Park (i.e. padded cell) and Hellingly.. along with few different versions of my name and surname, not too proud of that one, but it's something worth mentioning i suppose, heh. There's actually few decent pictures inside by photographers i wouldn't get to know otherwise, so hey ho. Book can be purchased here .

Richard Avedon

Can't say i find huge inspiration in Avedon's work, but i definitely respect him as a photographer and for the impact he had on fashion photography. He kind of reminds me the main character from Blowup by Antonioni, heh. Very successful, innovative in the fields he specialized and knows exactly what his weaknesses are. Recommended watch - Richard Avedon - Darkness and Light  (its quite irritating at the beginning, very 'american' way of movie-making, but once Avedon walks in and starts talking it gets much better). That's probably his best known photography: Bee Man, 1994 And my two favourite celebrity shots: Nastasjja Kinsky and the Serpent, 1981 [originally in colour] Charlie Chaplin - His Last Day in America, 1952 There's some really interesting stories behind both of those images, apparently Kinsky was fascinated with snakes and she was posing for that picture for hours until it finally kissed her, Chaplin (as the title of t...

Roger Ballen

Photographer standing behind Die Antwoords - I Fink U Freeky video and this is how i found out about him.. Born in New York, living in Johannesburg, he is focusing on documenting small dorps and villages of rural South Africa. I strongly recommend watching small series of him talking about his photography, he pays attention to so much detail! You can find it here . One of his quotes from the lecture: "Real is probably the most difficult word we deal with." There's a lot of human / animal correlations and references in his work which i really like. That's probably his most famous photography: Dresie and Casie, Twins 1993 Tommy, Samson and a Mask, 2000 Portrait of a Sleeping Girl, 2000 Eugene on the Phone, 2000 Sickroom, 2000 Scavenging, 2004 Puppy Between Feet, 1999
