SNT (day 5) - Winchburgh to Kirkintilloch

Whole day spent hiking along the Union Canal and Forth and Clyde Canal but this time day was far more interesting!

It was the first day of rain though, but I'll take it since it's day five, one may say that the rain was overdue at this point. I've got to huge Tesco at Brightons fairly quickly, did a little resupply and had a nice breakfast with coffee. There was a lot of cyclists on the trail a big group from Ireland cycling from Dublin to Copenhagen for some reason. 

Few miles later a first surprise awaited, the Falkirk Tunnel a 630 metre long underground passage build with pickaxes and gunpowder through which the canal was flowing, it had a surreal and spooky vibe but I really enjoyed it.

Not far after there was I would never expect (well I would if I read up about it before), the Falkirk Wheel an amazing contraption moving barges between the Union and Forth and Clyde Canal. Since both canals were at a different levels (and they had to be level to function properly) the wheel was simply lowering and lifting the ships to their desired canal it was ingenious and very interesting to watch!

After enjoying the show I moved on along Forth and Clyde Canal which was wider and much more lively than the Union Canal (both with people and wildlife) at one point I was reading a information board about abundance of pike in the canal and just as I turned back I saw a guy fishing out a big foot and a half like out of the water, he clearly wasn't a skilled fisherman as he didn't know how to handle it and I felt sorry for the poor fish.

It was raining at this point and I decided to find somewhere to camp fairly quickly after few failed attempt I managed to find a very nice sheltered meadow just by the trail and I set my tent up by an old oak tree.

I should reach Glasgow tomorrow and start my progress through West Highland Way portion of the trail.

Appalachian Trail (day 92) - Middle Mountain to Shaw's Hiker Hostel / mile 2081

Another early start in order to push to the last town stop on the AT - Monson, Maine. My initial plan was to stop before Monson and have a nero day there tomorrow, but a prospect of a shower, comfortable bed and of course town food was too good to pass on, especially as it was the last chance to have it. [Snail and myself with his massive food ressuply for Hundred Mile Wilderness] The theme of the day were river crossings, three to be precise. After climbing over Maxi Bald Mountain with great views of the surrounding area, the flat, muddy trail was going through the Bald Mountain Pond, Bald Mountain Stream and Piscataquis River. Since there was not much rain for the past couple of days all of the crossings were safe with the riverbed clearly visible and water at the knee level with slow to medium current. It still meant that my feet were wet for the entire day but it was a price I was willing to pay for very little elevation gain along the way. ...

Philadelphia

My third stop was in Philadelphia. I've stayed here at the Apple Hostel located close to Delaware river in quite central location. First place I visited was the Philadelphia Museum of Art featuring the famous Rocky Steps and two of his statues! Tourists were running up the stairs and raising their hands on the top as Sylvester Stallone has done in the movie, there was a sizable queue to take a picture with both Rocky statues as well. From here I went to see the top site on my list of things to visit in Philadelphia: Eastern State Penitentiary, Americas first prison which promoted solitary confinement and emphasized reform rather than punishment. It got closed in 1970s and was kept in the state of explorable ruin ever since it became a museum, it really scratched that urban exploration itch I had for a while. I'd say it was 23$ well spent!
