Appalachian Trail (day 65) - Salisbury to Tom Leonard Shelter / mile 1534
Back on the road and into the next state.
The whole house woke up at 5 AM, Vanessa was shuttling people into various places on the trail from 6 AM, I've ate pea and ham soup with few tortillas and said my goodbyes, it wouldn't be long before I've seen people on trail today as they've all been slack packing the opposite direction to where I was going.
Weather was really good after yesterday's rain, some of the rocks were still wet and I slipped on one of them during the descent from Bear Mountain, luckily it ended up with only few scratches on my left arm and a bruised ego.
Before Mount Race trail was going through lovely ledges with nice views, it was quite foggy though and the visibility wasn't great. I went past California here, then another girl that stayed with us at the hostel last night. DeeDee was hiking slightly different section, I haven't seen her until the afternoon. At this point Appalachian Trail left Connecticut and started it's journey though the state number eleven: Massachusetts.
Path dropped down to about 1000 feet here and was running alongside ponds and marshes a perfect spawning ground for mosquitoes which were running the show for the rest of the day. Someone set up a small trail magic by the road in this area with sodas, snacks and fresh cherries! Not far from here an 86 year young Harry Sano, left a bunch of handmade Tiger Tail Sticks for hikers to pick up in case they needed an aid in their journey.
I've arrived at the campsite at 6 PM, it was quite empty but I've met here Sean from Australia who just started his thru hike in New York and was planning to flip flop after reaching Katahdin. Sean was almost 50 years old but he was looking like he was in his mid thirties, he said that the adventurous life preserved him well. He travelled all across Australia, Tasmania and was now living in Auckland, New Zealand doing various hikes there.
It looked like the rain was going to make a return tonight and the mosquitoes would not leave us alone, so I said goodnight and went to bed.
